Synyster Gates (Syn) was born July 7, 1981 in Huntington Beach, California, his real name is Brian Elwin Haner, Jr, he's the lead guitarist of Avenged Sevenfold.

Syn claimed on the Avenged Sevenfold DVD All Excess that his name was created on a drunken drive through the park with The Rev.

Brian is the son of musician, author, and comedian Brian Haner, Sr. (better know by Papa Gates) , who worked with Sam the Sham's band in the 1970s .

Gates studied at the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, California, as part of the Guitar Institute of Music program, studying jazz and classical guitar.

Syn was a guitarist also in a side project called Pinkly Smooth with his childhood friend The Rev

Haner won the Revolver Golden God Award for Best Guitarist along with band mate, Zacky Vengeance in 2011 and 2014. In 2006 he won Dimebag Darrell "Young Shredder" Award and Total Guitar: Guitarist of the Year.
